As Independence Day approaches, MAS Claims Adjusting would like to wish everyone a happy and healthy holiday! That being said, the 4th of July is often riddled with accidents which, unfortunately, can result in insurance claims. Keep the following risks in mind as you enjoy the holiday to mitigate exposure on your property:
Fireworks
Fireworks, as fun and exciting as they are, can often lead to disastrous situations. As a homeowner, it is imperative that you practice precaution if using fireworks:
- Do not light off fireworks within 50 feet of your home.
- Make sure the fireworks are not pointed in the direction of your home.
- Have a responsible adult handle and ignite the fireworks so as to avoid injuries on your property.
- Never allow young children to play with or ignite fireworks.
- Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose close by in the event of a fire and to douse used fireworks before discarding.
- Make sure fireworks are legal in your area before buying or using them.
Grills/Bonfires
Grills and bonfires pose the risk of rapid-spread fires on your property. Use the following tips if you plan on grilling or building a bonfire:
Grills
- Grill outside and away from any structures.
- Make sure your grill is stable and cannot be tipped over.
- Keep your grill clean.
- Check for propane leaks on your gas grill.
- Never leave a lit grill unattended.
- Don’t allow kids or pets to play near the grill.
- Be ready to put out the fire.
Bonfires
- Do not burn damp material as it causes more smoke.
- Build the bonfire away from sheds, fences, trees, cables, and wires (as a rule of thumb the bonfire should be a minimum of five times its height from property).
- Don’t use petrol or paraffin to get the fire going as it may get out of control quickly.
- Don’t leave the bonfire unattended.
- Keep children and pets away from the bonfire.
- Don’t throw any fireworks into the fire.
- Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose nearby in case of emergencies (once the bonfire has died down, spray the embers with water to stop it reigniting).
We hope this information sheds light on the potential risks associated with the holiday season. Happy Independence Day from your MAS Claims Adjusting family!
